Bishop’s University announced today that Tony Addona will step down as Director of Athletics as of January 31, 2012. He will be relocating from Sherbrooke for family and professional reasons.
"We are disappointed to lose such a highly-regarded member of our close-knit community but we understand and respect the reasons that have led to this decision," said Principal Michael Goldbloom. "Tony is a person of great dedication and integrity who has earned the respect and affection of his colleagues. We wish him the best as he leaves to take on a new challenge."
Addona has held the position of Director of Athletics since February 2002. With almost ten years of service in this role, Addona has shepherded the Department of Athletics into the modern scholarship era of Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) competition, including the establishment of the Gaiter Club in 2002. He also oversaw the improvement of the Gaiters' athletic facilities, most notably the construction of the synthetic turf at Coulter Field in 2008. In addition to the administrative duties of the role of Director, Addona often pulled double-duty accepting coaching responsibilities. Addona was named Interim Head Football Coach for the Gaiters 2011 season having previously served as the Gaiters' Interim Head Football Coach in 2004, and won eight Bol d'Or provincial championships in 17 seasons with the Champlain Cougars. The University will conduct a nationwide search for a permanent Director of Athletics beginning early in 2012. Joey Sabo, Assistant Athletic Director, has accepted the interim role of Director of Athletics. |

Monsieur Addona quittera Sherbrooke pour des raisons personnelles et familiales. « Nous sommes déçus de perdre un membre estimé de notre communauté mais nous comprenons les motifs qui ont poussé Monsieur Addona à prendre cette décision et nous respectons son choix, » a dit le principal Michael Goldbloom. « Tony est un individu très dévoué et intègre qui s’est mérité le respect et l’affection de ses collègues. Nous lui souhaitons le meilleur alors qu’il passe à de nouveaux défis. » Monsieur Addona occupe le poste de directeur des sports depuis février 2002. Comptant près de dix ans d’expérience dans ce rôle, Monsieur Addona a piloté le département des sports vers l’ère moderne de la compétition de Sport Interuniversitaire canadien, incluant l’établissement du club des Gaiters en 2002. Il a aussi mené le projet de rénovation des établissements de sport, en particulier, la construction du terrain artificiel Coulter Field, qui fut inauguré en 2008. En plus des tâches administratives liées à la direction, Monsieur Addona a souvent porté plusieurs chapeaux ayant accepté d’ajouter à ses responsabilités le rôle d’entraineur. Monsieur Addona est devenu entraineur chef du programme de football des Gaiters par interim pour la deuxième fois en 2011. Il avait antérieurement été entraineur chef du programme de football par interim en 2004, et il avait remporté huit fois le Bol d'Or aux championnats provinciaux en dix-sept saisons avec les Cougars du cégep régional Champlain. L’Université amorcera sa recherche nationale pour combler le poste de directeur des sports de façon permanente tôt en 2012.
