Dynamo go 3-0 to win Reebok Shoot for the Cure Tournament

LENNOXVILLE, Que. – The Montreal Dynamo claimed the Reebok Shoot for the Cure tournament championship after play concluded on Sunday at the Mitchell Gym. The Dynamo downed the host Bishop's Gaiters 69-62 to post a perfect 3-0 record. The Gaiters went 0-3 at the event. In the day's other game, the Toronto Varsity Blues downed their Old Four rivals the Queen's Gaels by the same 69-62 score. Toronto finished at 2-1, while Queen's was 1-2.

Karine Bibeau of the Dynamo was named the Tournament MVP, while the Tournament All-Star team included Marie-Michelle Genois of the Dynamo, the Gaiters' Gabrielle Chamberland, Hanna Koposhynka of Queen's, and Varsity Blues Joanne Medri and Jill Stratton.

GAME 5: TORONTO 69, QUEEN'S 62

Joanne Medri's 19 points led the U of T Varsity Blues to a 69-62 win over the Queen's Gaels in Game 5 of the tournament. Medri went 8-for-16 from the field, and her pair of first-quarter treys led the Blues to an 18-11 lead after ten minutes. Toronto pulled away in the second quarter, and led throughout the rest of the contest, with leads of 38-22 at halftime and 53-39 after three quarters. The Gaels closed the game with a 6-2 run in the final 90 seconds, to cut the final margin to seven points.

Toronto had three players in double figures. Along with Medri's 19, Jill Stratton scored 14 points, while Sherri Pierce added 13.

For Queen's, Lisa Minutillo came off the bench to score 15 points, while Jenny Wright scored 14 and Hanna Koposhynska added ten. Sydney Kernahan led all players with eight rebounds, while Koposhynska grabbed six.

Toronto outrebounded Queen's 43-34, with Alicia Van Kampen, Jenalle Vanhie and Stratton each picking up five.

The Blues shot 42% from the field, with Queen's hitting 40% of their shots. Queen's committed 19 fouls, to the Blues' ten.

Medri was named the player of the game for Toronto, while Wright took similar honours for Queen's.

 

GAME 6: DYNAMO 69, BISHOP'S 62
A 14-point, eight-rebound performance by Marie-Michelle Genois led the Dynamo to a come-from-behind win, 69-62, over the host Bishop's Gaiters in the tournament's final game. Genois scored eight second-half points as the Dynamo overcame a 14-point deficit with 2:30 left in the third quarter.

The Gaiters opened strongly, playing by far their best quarter of the tournament, and took a 20-9 lead after ten minutes. Bishop's was keyed by strong free-throw shooting, as they hit eight of ten free throws in the first quarter.

The Dynamo chipped away at the lead in the second quarter, cutting the margin to 32-28 at halftime. In the third quarter, after the Dynamo had tied the game at 34-34, the Gaiters went on a 14-0 run over the next three minutes to take a 48-34 lead. The run was keyed by six consecutive made free throws. However, that was the high-water mark for the Gaiters, as the Dynamo closed the quarter with an 11-1 run of their own, to cut the gap to 49-45.

A tip-in by Genois with just under four minutes to go gave the Dynamo the lead for good at 58-56, and they made eight free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

In addition to Genois' performance, the Dynamo also got strong performances from Marian Fortier, who scored a game-high 16 points, along with Karine Bibeau, who scored 11 points and made a game-high seven assists.

For Bishop's, rookie forward Eloisa Katz led with 14 points, while sophomore Danna Janvier added 13 and Gabrielle Chamberland had nine. Annick Stephanny Charles grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

The Dynamo outrebounded Bishop's 46-34, and outshot the Gaiters 42.3% to 29.2%.
