ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Jessy Roy is the Bishop's Gaiters Athlete of the Week. The fifth-year point guard from Val d'Or, Que. led the Gaiters to a pair of wins over the weekend, averaging 17 points and six assists. On Friday night, her 18 points led all scorers as the Gaiters defeated UQAM 73-57. She also made a game-high five assists and a pair of steals. On Saturday, the former Volontaire scored 16 points, grabbed a team-high six rebounds, and made seven assists as the Gaiters dumped Laval 72-56, evening their record at 4-4 on the year. Roy now leads the province, and is eighth in the CIS, with 4.7 assists per game.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (9-12, 9-11 CIS, 4-4 Quebec)
FRIDAY – Gaiters 73, UQAM 57 A double-double by Catherine Bélanger-Pâquet led the Gaiters to a 73-57 victory over the UQAM Citadins. Bélanger-Pâquet scored 13 points and grabbed ten rebounds as she picked up her second double-double of the season.
SATURDAY – Gaiters 72, Laval 56

MEN’S BASKETBALL (7-10, 7-9 CIS, 2-3 Quebec)
FRIDAY – UQAM 82, Gaiters 79 SATURDAY – Gaiters 79, Laval 74 Facing a must-win situation, the Gaiters overcame a 17-point deficit to defeat the Laval Rouge et Or, 79-73, at the Mitchell Gym, Saturday afternoon. The Gaiters came into the contest three games behind the fourth-place Rouge et Or, with only nine games left. With the win, the Gaiters are now two games back of a playoff spot, with a pair of contests yet to come against Laval. UP NEXT: The Gaiters return to action on Friday night, January 27, as they host the Concordia Stingers. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY (3-3-2 MWIHC) Polar bears go 1-2-1 at P.E.I. Tourney
The Bishop’s Polar Bears traveled to P.E.I. for their second league tournament in the season, and their first action in nearly two months. The Bears went 1-2-1 with a win over Cape Breton, a tie against the host Holland College, and losses to UNB and Acadia.
SATURDAY – Polar Bears 2, Holland College 2 A late goal by the Hurricanes gave the host team a share of the spoils in the Bears' first game of the tournament. Taylor Wade and Marina Trudeau were the scorers for the Bears, while Katie Booth tended to the net. Candace Arsenault and Shalan Graham replied for Holland College
SATURDAY – Polar Bears 3, Cape Breton 1 Three second-period goals helped the Polar Bears down the Cape Breton Capers 3-1 in a physical matchup. Scoring for the Bears were Chelsey Clarke, Katie Ramm, and Sara Larivière, while Kelsey Robertson had the sole CBU marker, late in the first period. Bianca Letarte picked up the win with a solid performance in net for the Bears.
SATURDAY – Acadia 6, Polar Bears 0 The third game in a day proved to be too much for the Bears, as they fell 6-0 to the Acadia Axewomen. Acadia scored goals in the first and second, and pulled away with four goals in the third. Six different players scored for Acadia, with Annie Blais, Sam Hawes, Kerstin Surgenor, Raelee Rath, Marley Bowen and Natasha Furey all lighting the lamp. Katie Booth was the goaltender for the Bears.
SUNDAY – UNB 3, Polar Bears 0 The UNB Red Blazers used a hat trick from Heather Braun to pick up a 3-0 win over the Polar Bears. Braun scored once in each period, as she made the Bears pay for the few mistakes they made in the game. The game was a fast-paced, penalty-free affair. Victoria Jared got the shutout for UNB, while Bianca Letarte took the loss for Bishop's.
UP NEXT: The Polar Bears will return to action this weekend at a tournament at the Cairns Arena in South Burlington, Vermont. The Bears will play four games over three days.
