Gaiters fall 83-57 to Maine in preseason women's basketball

LENNOXVILLE, Que. – Amber Smith’s 21 points and a double-double from Corinne Wellington led the Maine Black Bears to an 83-57 victory over the Bishop’s Gaiters in exhibition women’s basketball action tonight at the Mitchell Gym. Wellington scored 18 points, and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds for the Black Bears, who won their second straight game on their Canadian tour.

For Bishop’s (0-1), Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles (Gatineau, Que.) was the only player in double figures, as she scored 16 points, including four three-pointers. Annick Stephanny Charles (Laval, Que.) scored eight points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Katy Germain scored seven points, as she went 2-for-4 from the three-point line.
The Gaiters used 15 players in the game, as all eight rookies saw the floor. Bailey Trafford (Tracey Mills, N.B.) led the newcomers with four points and five rebounds.
The game was closely fought through the first half, with Maine holding a 17-15 lead after the first quarter, and a 38-34 edge at halftime. However, the Black Bears used their strong inside game to wear down the Gaiters in the second half, putting the game out of reach with a 16-0 run early in the third quarter. For the game, Maine scored 44 points in the paint, while holding Bishop’s to 13.
Maine outshot the Gaiters 47% to 30% and went 19-for-24 from the free throw line. The Gaiters were 12-for-28 from the stripe. Bishop’s forced 26 Maine turnovers, but fell victim to 29 of their own.
Maine had four players in double figures, as Samantha Wheeler scored 13 points, and Katelyn Vanderhoff added ten. Wheeler, Vanderhoff and Samantha Baranowski each grabbed nine rebounds for Maine, who outrebounded Bishop’s 52-38.
The Gaiters are now off until October 15, when they will travel to Thunder Bay, Ont. for the Lakehead tournament.
