MONTREAL – A jumper by Nicolas Langley with 1:57 to go proved to be decisive as the McGill Redmen edged the Bishop's Gaiters, 70-67, in Quebec university men's basketball league play at the Love Competition Hall in Montreal, Thursday. Langley's bucket, two of his team-high 18 points, put McGill up 68-67, the ninth and final lead change of a frenetic, back-and-forth, final quarter. The Gaiters had the ball for the game's final 20 seconds, but a potential game-tying three-pointer rimmed out, allowing the Redmen to come away with the victory.
"I was pleased with our effort. We executed very well at times," said Rod Gilpin, the Gaiters' head coach. "Our pressure defence was very good, but we have to rebound way better than we did." McGill led 38-31 at halftime and by as many as eight points midway through the third quarter, but the Gaiters went on a 13-4 run to take a 55-54 lead after the third, keyed by six points from Tim Hunter (Baie d'Urfé, Que.) in the last 1:14 of the quarter. "That was our best third quarter of the year," said Gilpin. "It showed some grit and toughness from our guys, because we could have folded at that point. The third quarter has been an issue for us, but we ended up outscoring them. It was led by our defence, and during that time, we controlled our backboard." The Gaiters (5-14, 5-10 CIS, 0-6 Quebec) were led by 19 points from Hunter, while second-year centre Mike Andrews (Oakville, Ont.) scored 16 points, grabbed eight rebounds and tied his career high with four blocked shots. McGill (10-16, 8-10 CIS, 4-3 Quebec) had a pair of players with double-doubles, as Karim Sy-Morissette scored 11 points and had 11 rebounds, while Tristan Renaud-Tremblay scored 11 and grabbed 13 boards. Aleksandar Mitrovic was the fourth Redmen player in double figures, also with 11 points. McGill outrebounded Bishop's 42-23, but the Gaiters committed only ten turnovers, while forcing 20 McGill miscues. The Gaiters return to action on Friday, January 20, as they visit the UQAM Citadins. The Gaiters' first home game of 2012 is set for Saturday, January 21 at 4 p.m. against the Laval Rouge et Or. MCGILL 70, BISHOP'S 67
