LENNOXVILLE, Que. – A 12-5 win by the Bishop's Gaiters men's rugby team was the highlight of the Gaiters' annual Homecoming Friday triple-header at Coulter Field. The Gaiters downed the Sherbrooke Vert & Or in a tense contest before nearly 1,000 fans. Earlier in the night, the Gaiters women's soccer team fought to a 1-1 draw with the UQTR Patriotes, and women's rugby fell 34-0 to Sherbrooke.

MEN’S RUGBY: GAITERS 12, SHERBROOKE 5

Ryan Ozeroff's (Ottawa, Ont.) two-yard plunge in the 52nd minute gave the Bishop's Gaiters their first win of the season, 12-5, over the Sherbrooke Vert et Or in Quebec university rugby union action tonight. The nearly 1,000 fans at Coulter Field saw the fifth-year hooker take a pass from Billy Murphy (Richmond, Que.) directly off a penalty and touch the ball down underneath the goalposts.

The Gaiters dominated the opening stages, with particularly strong work in their lineouts and scrums. Noah Harrison (Toronto, Ont.) put Bishop's on the board in the 12th minute. Coming off a lineout 10 yards from the try line, Adam Moore (Dartmouth, N.S.) flipped the ball to Harrison, who ran around the pack and into the end zone for the score. Bishop's held the ball for the most of the first half, including a late push near halftime, but were unlucky not to extend their lead.

Sherbrooke came out stronger in the second half, and tied the game in the 46th minute on a five-yard run by Patrick Colombe. They appeared to have taken the lead on Yannick Mailhot's conversion attempt, but it was ruled no good by the referee.

After the Gaiters worked the ball back into the Sherbrooke end, the Vert & Or were called for a penalty five yards out from goal. Murphy took the tap, and found Ozeroff coming through the middle, setting up the game-winning score. Nicolas Alexandre's (Bordeaux, France) conversion provided the final margin. Sherbrooke picked up one bonus point from the contest for their seven-point loss.

The Gaiters (1-1-1, 6 pts) return to action on Friday, September 30, when they host the Concordia Stingers. Kickoff at Coulter Field is set for 8 p.m.

WOMEN’S SOCCER: UQTR 1, GAITERS 1
A 77th minute goal by Jessica Lavallée allowed the UQTR Patriotes to salvage a 1-1 tie with the Bishop's Gaiters in Quebec university soccer action tonight at Coulter Field.

Frédérique Cloutier (Lethbridge, Alta.) had put the Gaiters ahead in the 36th minute, on her first goal of the season. The substitute took a pass from rookie Patricia Murray (Sydney, N.S.) and made no mistake from the top of the penalty area. She had three opportunities to extend the lead late in the first half and early in the second, but narrowly missed the net each time.

Lavallée tied the game with 13 minutes left, as she took a through ball up the middle from Amélie Perron, and fired it low past the Gaiters' Marie-Pierre Harvey (Quebec City, Que.). The Patriotes carried more of the possession as the second half wore on.

Harvey made six saves for the Gaiters, while Stéphanie Rousseau made seven for UQTR. The goal scorers were each named their teams' respective MVPs. The Gaiters attempted 16 shots in the game, led by Cloutier's seven attempts, while UQTR tried eight shots.

Bishop's (0-4-1) returns to action on Tuesday night, as they visit the Sherbrooke Vert & Or.
