LENNOXVILLE, Que. - The second annual Gaiter Walk for ALS is set for this Saturday morning (September 18) on the Bishop’s campus. The Walk is organized by the Gaiters’ Women’s Soccer team, led by third-year midfielder Samantha Juraschka (Waterdown, Ont.).
The Walk continues a tradition of supporting ALS research by the Women’s Soccer team that started in 2007. That fall, the team participated in the Montreal Walk for ALS in support of teammate Lauren Proudfoot ’08, whose father Tony had just been diagnosed with ALS.
“We feel it is important to continue the tradition and support Bishop’s students even after graduation,” said Juraschka. “This weekend is a prime opportunity to spread awareness for an important cause and give back to the community that has supported Bishop’s students over the years.”James Yurichuk of the B.C. Lions, a former Gaiter football player, has kick-started this year’s fundraising effort by agreeing to donate his entire game cheque for this week to the event. This year’s event is expected to greatly exceed the $3,000 raised at last year’s walk.
The Gaiter Walk for ALS will start in the Quad at 10 a.m. on Saturday, and follow a two-kilometre route around campus. The event costs $15, with the proceeds going to the Tony Proudfoot Fund. The first 500 participants will receive a limited edition Homecoming t-shirt. Participants can register today in the Student Union building from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., or online at https://secure.e2rm.com/registrant/startup.aspx?eventid=57320. Participants can also register onsite, starting at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.
