LENNOXVILLE, Que. – A double-double by Anneth Him-Lazarenko led the McGill Martlets over the Bishop's Gaiters, 63-55, in Quebec university women's basketball league play at the Mitchell Gym, Friday night. The fourth-year guard scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, both game highs, for the Martlets, who now lead the Quebec conference by 1 ½ games.
After McGill (13-9, 13-8 CIS, 8-3 Quebec) took a 58-40 lead with 5:27 left, the Gaiters mounted a late comeback, going on a 15-0 run to pull to within one possession with 40 seconds left. However, that was as close as hosts got, as McGill scored the game's final five points. The Martlets never trailed in the contest, holding leads of 16-12 after the first quarter, 35-31 at halftime and 50-37 after three quarters.
Bishop's (10-13, 10-12 CIS, 5-5 Quebec) was led by Eloisa Katz (Ra'anana, Israel), who scored 14 points. Jessy Roy (Val d'Or, Que.) scored eight points, as did sophomore centre Danna Janvier (Laval, Que.). Véronique Fortin-Tremblay had a career-high four blocked shots, and she led the Gaiters with six rebounds.
Him-Lazarenko was the only Martlet in double figures, while Marie-Ève Martin and Gabriela Hebert scored nine each. The Gaiters held Françoise Charest, the Martlets' leading scorer, to only two points, but she did post game highs with five assists and four steals.
McGill outrebounded Bishop's 46-39, and outshot Bishop's 32% to 30%. The Gaiters forced 24 McGill turnovers. McGill shot 40% from three-point range (8-for-20), while Bishop's was 5-for-18 (28%).
The Gaiters return to action on Friday, February 10, as they visit the Concordia Stingers. Their next home game is on Saturday, February 11, against the UQAM Citadins.
