LENNOXVILLE, Que. – A strong all-around performance by Jessy Roy (Val d'Or, Que.) led the Bishop's Gaiters to a 59-55 victory over the league-leading Concordia Stingers in Quebec university women's basketball league play at the Mitchell Gym, Friday night. The fifth-year point guard scored 12 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and made a team-high seven assists and four steals, as she led the Gaiters to their third consecutive victory.
"She is our leader. People don't understand everything she does," said Alex Perno, the Gaiters' head coach. "She has to [defend] the best player on the other team; she has to bring the ball up, she's just unbelievable. For me she's an MVP."
Roy scored in double figures for the fifth straight time, and increased her league-leading assist total to 5.0 per game.
The Gaiters got off to a strong start, racing out to a 13-4 lead on the way to a 20-13 first-quarter lead. Concordia came all the way back in the second quarter, and while they took their first lead of the contest at 29-28 on a three-pointer by Magalie Beaulieu, the Gaiters went into the break holding a 33-32 edge.
In the second half, the Gaiters' defence took hold, as they held Concordia to only two field goals, and took a 47-39 lead after the third. The Gaiters led by as many as ten points in the fourth quarter, but Concordia mounted a late comeback, as they went on a 7-0 run to cut the Gaiter lead to 55-52. However, that was as close as the Stingers got, as the Gaiters made four free throws down the stretch to clinch the win.
Véronique Fortin-Tremblay (Chicoutimi, Que.) was the only other player in double figures for Bishop's (10-12, 10-11 CIS, 5-4 Quebec), as she scored a game-high 13 points. Catherine Bélanger-Pâquet grabbed a team-high eight rebounds for Bishop's, who outrebounded Concordia 43-39.
Concordia (11-9, 11-9 CIS, 6-2 Quebec) had three players in double figures, led by Kaylah Barrett, who scored 12 points and had eight rebounds. Alex Boudreau (11 points) and Magalie Beaulieu (10) were the other leaders for the Stingers. Tina Mpondani grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
The Gaiters return to action on Friday, February 3, as they host the McGill Martlets at the Mitchell Gym. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
