MEN’S BASKETBALL (2-26, 2-23 CIS, 1-10 QUBL)
Gaiters nab first league win

THURSDAY: Concordia 90 Gaiters 86
A 23 point effort by Onnex Blackwood was not enough as the Gaiters fell to the Concordia Stingers 90-86 on Thursday night at the Mitchell Gym. The Gaiters steadily chipped away at the Stingers' lead, and a traditional three-point play by Blackwood cut the gap to 78-76 with 5:33 left in regulation. However, the Gaiters could not get over the hump, and a pair of late three-pointers by Decee Krah and Jean-André Moussignac proved fatal to the Gaiters' comeback attempt. In addition to Blackwood's 23, the Gaiters were helped out by a double-double by Tim Hunter who potted 15 points while adding ten rebounds as well as 4 assists. Also having big nights for Bishop’s were Mike Andrews who scored 17 while adding a season high four blocks, and Sean Monplaisir also added a season-high 17 points.

SATURDAY: Gaiters 78, UQAM 68
A 22-point night by Tim Hunter led the Gaiters their first league win, 78-68, over the UQAM Citadins on Saturday night at the Mitchell Gym. The third-year forward went 8-for-16 from the field along with grabbing eight rebounds and adding five assists. Toronto natives Oraine Green and Sean Monplaisir helped the Gaiters to secure the win as they both scored 12 points. Mike Andrews chipped in with ten points and two blocks before fouling out in the fourth quarter. The Gaiters led 36-32 at halftime and stretched their lead to as many as 14 points in the third quarter. UQAM pulled to within four points in the fourth quarter, but the Gaiters would not allow the lead to slip away as they responded with an 8-0 run in the last three minutes to dash UQAM’s comeback hopes.

Gaiters drop a pair of home contests

THURSDAY: Concordia 76 Gaiters 53
An inability to hold onto the ball proved to be costly as the Bishop's Gaiters fell 76-53 to the Concordia Stingers in Quebec University Basketball League women’s play Thursday night at the Mitchell Gym. The Gaiters committed 28 turnovers, one short of their season high, resulting in 32 Concordia points. The game was tied 22-22 early in the second quarter before Concordia went on a 16-4 run to break the contest open. The Stingers led 38-31 at halftime, and stretched their lead to 56-43 after the third quarter, as the Gaiters got no closer than five points. Leading the Gaiters was rookie centre Danna Janvier who netted 12 points while Bailey Trafford and Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles each scored seven.

SATURDAY: UQAM 64, Gaiters 63
A ten-footer by Karine Boudrias with eight seconds left gave the UQAM Citadins a come-from-behind 64-63 victory over the Bishop’s Gaiters in Quebec University Basketball League women’s action on Saturday night at the Mitchell Gym. Boudrias, who finished with ten points, could not convert the three-point play, and the Gaiters had the ball with a chance to win the game. However, the storybook ending was spoiled as Catherine Bélanger-Pâquet’s off-balance jumper rimmed out as time expired. The final sequence was the culmination of a wild fourth quarter that saw two ties and seven lead changes. The Gaiters led 49-44 after the third quarter, and UQAM did not take the lead until a three-point play by Émie Simard at 4:04 put them up 58-57.  For Bishop’s, Jessy Roy led with ten points, while Bailey Trafford and Gabrielle Côté-Caouette scored nine each.
