WEEKLY RELEASE: Women's Hoops upset of McGill highlights Gaiter weekend

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK:
 
The Bishop’s Gaiters Male Athlete of the Week is Onnex Blackwood of the Men’s Basketball team. The second year guard from Scarborough, Ont. scored a team high 17 points against McGill on Saturday night while adding eight rebounds.
 
The Bishop’s Gaiters Female Athlete of the Week is Bailey Trafford of the Women’s Basketball team. Trafford, a first-year centre from Centreville Que., was the leading scorer for the Gaiters on Saturday night, as she scored 14 points while adding a team high five rebounds.
 
HONOUR ROLL:
  • Mike Andrews, Men’s Basketball -- Had a double-double Saturday scoring 13 and grabbing 11 rebounds with three blocks.
  • Jessy Roy, Women’s Basketball -- Scored twelve points and had eight rebounds Saturday vs. McGill.
  • Alysha McLeod, Women’s Hockey -- Played strong in net for the Polar Bears over the weekend.
  • Tim Hunter, Men’s Basketball -- Scored ten points Saturday while adding four assists.
  • Katy Germain, Women’s Basketball -- Scored 13 points Saturday night.
  • Taylor Wade, Women’s Indoor Soccer -- Took home game MVP honours vs. Sherbrooke.

MEN’S BASKETBALL (2-28, 2-25 CIS, 1-12 QUBL)
Gaiters suffer home loss to Redmen

SATURDAY: McGill 73, Gaiters 64
Winn Clarke’s 19 points led the McGill Redmen to a 73-64 victory over the Gaiters on Saturday night at the Mitchell Gym. The first three quarters of the game saw six ties and nine lead changes as neither team was able to gain complete control. The Gaiters led through the majority of the first half, as they took an 18-15 first-quarter and a 34-32 halftime lead. However a 25-point third-quarter, capped by a 10-0 run over the last 2:12 of the period was the difference. Onnex Blackwood led the Gaiters with 17 points while grabbing eight rebounds. Mike Andrews took home a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds along with three blocks. Tim Hunter picked up ten points while also adding a game-high four assists.

UP NEXT:  The Gaiters have a pair of games this week, as they visit McGill on Thursday, and close out their home schedule on Saturday night against Laval. Both games tip off at 8 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (8-15, 8-14 CIS, 3-10 QUBL)
Gaiters upset No. 10 McGill to keep playoff hopes alive

SATURDAY: Gaiters 81 #10 McGill 62
A balanced attack led the Gaiters to a resounding 81-62 upset of No. 10-ranked McGill on Saturday night at the Mitchell Gym. Five Gaiters scored in double figures, led by 14 points by Bailey Trafford, as Bishop’s led from wire-to-wire against the league pennant-winners. The rookie centre went 6-for-11 from the field, and grabbed a team-high five rebounds. Katy Germain scored 13 points, including going 3-for-4 from three-point territory. Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles and Jessy Roy scored 12 points each, while Gabrielle Chamberland chipped in with 11. Roy also added a season-high eight assists, falling just short of an unconventional double-double.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters have two games this week. On Thursday, they conclude the home-and-home series with McGill in Montreal. On Saturday, the Gaiters close out their home schedule with a crucial matchup against the fourth-place Laval Rouge et Or. This will also mark the final home game for Katy Germain and Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles.

WOMEN’S INDOOR SOCCER (0-5)

Gaiters shut out by crosstown rivals

 

Sunday: Sherbrooke 4, Gaiters 0

Two goals and an assist by Chloé Belhumeur-Limoges carried the Sherbrooke Vert & Or over the Gaiters in Quebec University Indoor Soccer League women's play on Sunday afternoon in Sherbrooke. Along with Belhumeur-Limoges, Sherbrooke goals came from Camille Vandenberghe and Andréanne Gagné. Josianne Lecomte made five saves to complete the shutout. First-year midfielder Taylor Wade was the Gaiters' game MVP, while Gagné won similar honours for Sherbrooke. Molly Bucholtz made fifteen saves in the Gaiters net.

 

UP NEXT: The Gaiters' regular-season odyssey continues on Friday as they return home to take on UQAM at the Centre Roland-Dussault in Fleurimont. Kickoff is set for 9 p.m.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY (9-8)
Polar Bears drop trio of games in Ontario

 

The Polar Bears started off their Ontario road trip with a tight 2-1 loss to Rideau-St. Lawrence. Chantal Richard scored the lone goal for the Polar Bears with Jessica Fourney adding the assist. Alysha McLeod stood tall in the Polar Bears net.

 

On Saturday Bishop’s travelled to Nepean where a poor first period led to the Polar Bears falling 4-0. Katie Booth took the loss in the Bishop's net.

 

Bishop’s wrapped up their weekend losing 3-1 at Gloucester. Vanessa Belanger scored the lone goal for the Polar Bears with Sara Lariviere and Kassandra Bernie adding assists. Alysha McLeod once again stood strong in the Bishop’s net.

 

UP NEXT: The Polar Bears hit the road for a three-game, two-day trip to the Ottawa area this weekend. They will play the Rideau-St. Lawrence Intermediates on Friday night at 8 p.m. in Kemptville, Ontario. On Saturday, the Bears head into Ottawa and play the Nepean Wild Cats at 10 a.m., and Gloucester at 2 p.m.
