Weekly Release 2: Gaiter season now in full swing

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:
The Bishop’s Gaiters Athlete of the Week is Jordan Heather of the Football team. Heather, a third-year quarterback from Oromocto, N.B., threw for a career-high 327 yards in the Gaiters' 25-18 loss to Concordia on Saturday. Heather went 25-for-45 from the field and also added a pair of touchdowns.
 
HONOUR ROLL:
  • Andrew Jamieson, Men's Rugby – Second-year centre scored the Gaiters' only try on Friday
  • Allix Laffoley-Cartier, Women's Rugby – Veteran scrum half scored five minutes into Friday's game, putting Bishop's up 5-0
  • Olivier Audette-Genier, Golf – Was Gaiters' low scorer at Owl's Head tournament
  • Molly Bucholtz, Women's Soccer – Made 8 saves on Friday vs. McGill
  • Alexander Fox, Football – Made six catches for 128 yards, and also had 158 return yards.
  • LeeAnna Coates, Women's Rugby – No. 8 was instrumental in every Gaiters advance on Friday

Gaiters fall at home, next week travelling to Mount Allison

SATURDAY: Concordia 25, Gaiters 18
LENNOXVILLE, Que. – Despite a 300-yard passing performance by Jordan Heather (Oromocto, N.B.), the Bishop's Gaiters suffered a 25-18 loss to the Concordia Stingers today before 1,708 fans at Coulter Field. Heather went 25-for-45 for 327 yards, as he had the first 300-yard game of his career.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters are on the road, as they visit the Mount Allison Mounties on Saturday afternoon. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. Atlantic (1 p.m. Eastern) at MacAulay Field. The game will be broadcast and webcast on Eastlink Cable.

WOMEN’S SOCCER (0-2-0)
Gaiters drop a pair of games at Coulter Field, home again on Friday

Women’s Soccer dropped a pair of games to nationally ranked teams, falling 2-0 to No. 8 McGill on Friday, and 6-0 at No. 3 Montreal on Sunday.

FRIDAY – #8 McGill 2, Gaiters 0
A pair of goals by Rebecca Green gave the No. 8-ranked McGill Martlets a 2-0 shutout of the Bishop's Gaiters in Quebec university soccer action this afternoon at Coulter Field. Green scored in the 18th and 39th minutes to stake the Martlets to their 2-0 halftime lead.

SUNDAY – #3 Montreal 6, Gaiters 0
A four-goal outburst in the last ten minutes of the first half keyed the No. 3-ranked Montreal Carabins to a shutout, 6-0, over the Bishop's Gaiters in university women's soccer at Coulter Field today. Véronique Maranda and Eva Thouvenot each scored a pair of goals late in the first half, as the Carabins turned a 1-0 edge into a 5-0 halftime lead.

MEN’S RUGBY (0-1, 0 pts)
Gaiters suffer a loss to the McGill Redman, visit Concordia this week

FRIDAY – McGill 26, Gaiters 10
A pair of tries by Joshua Blair led the McGill Redmen to a 26-10 victory over the Bishop's Gaiters in Quebec university men's rugby action tonight at Coulter Field. Blair touched twice late in the first half as the Redmen overcame an early Gaiters lead to post a comeback victory.

WOMEN’S RUGBY (0-1)
Gaiters begin season with a loss to Ottawa

FRIDAY: Ottawa 56, Gaiters 5
Three tries by Sarah Meng led the Ottawa Gee-Gees to a 56-5 victory over the Gaiters on Friday night at Coulter Field. Meng was the high scorer for an Ottawa squad that found the end zone 10 times.

GOLF (6th of 12)
Golf finishes 6th at Owl's Head, Audette-Génier cracks top 10.

Golf enjoyed a solid weekend in the second tournament of the season, played Sunday and Monday at the Owl's Head course in Mansonville. The Gaiters finished in sixth place, with a two day aggregate of 646 (332-314). Laval was the team leader, with a two-day aggregate score of 577. Once again, the Gaiters improved over the course of the event, with each player taking at least one shot off their first-day score.

The Gaiters were led by Olivier Audette-Génier, who shot 148 (75-73) and tied for 8th place overall. Dane Fitzpatrick also cracked the top 20, as his two-day score of 153 (77-76) was good for a tie for 17th place. James Laing finished tied for 28th with a score of 161 (84-77), while Ryan Vintinner (178, 57th) and Jason Hines Duncliffe (184,t-61st) rounded out the Gaiter contingent.

UP NEXT: Golf is off until September 21, when they head to the Club de Golf de l’Île de Montréal for another two-day event, the final tournament before the provincial championship.

LACROSSE (1-0)
Lacrosse opens regular season with win at Queen's.

Lacrosse opened the season with a pair of road games. On Saturday, they downed the Concordia senior team 16-1. On Sunday, the Gaiters defeated the Queen's Gaels 16-8 in their CUFLA season opener.

UP NEXT: Lacrosse has one league game this week, as they host Trent on Sunday at 1 p.m.
