WEEKLY RELEASE 4: Men's Rugby win highlights 2011 Homecoming Weekend

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:
The Bishop’s Gaiters Athlete of the Week is Adam Moore of the Men's Rugby team. Moore, a second-year flanker from Dartmouth, N.S., was the Gaiters' Man of the Match in their 12-5 win over Sherbrooke on Friday night. Moore led the Gaiters with his strong defensive presence throughout the match. His hard work at breakdowns helped the Gaiters keep possession, steal the ball or slow down the Vert & Or offence. He set up the Gaiters' first try of the match by making a quick pass to Noah Harrison off a lineout.
 
HONOUR ROLL:
  • Keegan Durovick, Lacrosse – Made 19 saves in Gaiters' 12-11 loss to McGill on Thursday
  • Frédérique Cloutier, Women's Soccer – Scored the Gaiters' opening goal in Friday's tie with UQTR.
  • Kyle Kelly, Men's Rugby – Third-year prop carried the ball for over 40 yards on Friday
  • O'Shane Daley, Football – Led Gaiters' defence with 6.5 tackles, an interception and a knockdown
  • Lisa Boateng, Women's Rugby – Led Gaiters' defence on Friday against Sherbrooke
  • Josh Crone, Lacrosse – Led Gaiters with five goals on Thursday night
  • Patricia Murray, Women's Soccer – Rookie midfielder set up Gaiters' first goal on Friday
  • Andrew Jamieson, Men's Rugby – Second-year centre had a strong overall performance
  • Shane McDonald, Football – Scored first career touchdown on Saturday.
  • Ryan Ozeroff, Men's Rugby – Scored the winning try for the Gaiters on Friday
  • Ryland Smith, Football – Made his third interception of the year on Saturday, tying him for the league lead.

FOOTBALL (1-3)
Gaiters fall to No. 4 Montreal at Homecoming, visit McGill on Friday
 
SATURDAY: Montreal 36, Gaiters 22
LENNOXVILLE, Que. – A pair of late first-half touchdowns led the No. 4-ranked Montreal Carabins to a 36-22 win over the Bishop's Gaiters on Saturday at Coulter Field. The Homecoming crowd of 2,165 saw the Carabins turn a 10-6 deficit into a 20-10 halftime lead with two touchdowns in the last minute of the second quarter.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters' next game is set for Friday, September 30, as they visit the McGill Redmen. Kickoff at Molson Stadium in Montreal is set for 7 p.m.
 
WOMEN’S SOCCER (0-4-1)
Gaiters lose Wednesday, tie Friday at homecoming
WEDNESDAY – UQAM 1, Gaiters 0
An 84th minute goal by Justine Labrecque gave the UQAM Citadins a 1-0 win over the Bishop's Gaiters on Wednesday night at Laval, Que. Labrecque's free kick from 45-yards out bounced over Gaiter goalkeeper Marie-Pierre Harvey, denying the Gaiters a share of the spoils in their first road game of the year.
Defender Rebecca Yates was named the Gaiters' MVP of the game, while Andrée Gariepy won similar honours for UQAM. Harvey made eight saves for Bishop's, while Constance Laroche-Lefebvre made six.
FRIDAY– UQTR 1, Gaiters 1
A 77th minute goal by Jessica Lavallée allowed the UQTR Patriotes to salvage a 1-1 tie with the Bishop's Gaiters in Quebec university soccer action tonight at Coulter Field.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters (1-1-1, 6 pts) have three games this week. They visit the Sherbrooke Vert & Or on Tuesday night at 7:30. On Friday, they will return home and host Concordia in a 4 p.m. kickoff. On Sunday, the Gaiters head to Montreal to play the No. 2-ranked Carabins.

Gaiters beat Sherbrooke for homecoming, home again Friday
 
FRIDAY – Gaiters 12, Sherbrooke 5
Ryan Ozeroff's two-yard plunge in the 52nd minute gave the Bishop's Gaiters their first win of the season, 12-5, over the Sherbrooke Vert et Or on Friday at Coulter Field. The nearly 1,000 fans at Coulter Field saw the fifth-year hooker take a pass from Billy Murphy directly off a penalty and touch the ball down underneath the goalposts.

Gaiters shut out at homecoming
 
FRIDAY: Sherbrooke 34, Gaiters 0
A pair of tries each by Lisa-Anne Lessard and Anne-Sophie Hamel led the Sherbrooke Vert & Or to a 34-0 shutout of the Gaiters on Friday night at Coulter Field. Lessard's first score, on the stroke of halftime, gave Sherbrooke an insurmountable 19-0 lead.

GOLF (8th of 12)
Pair of tough rounds send Gaiters into eighth
 
Golf suffered a difficult two days at the UQAM Open, held at the Île de Montréal golf club, posting their two highest scores of the season. The team shot an aggregate total of 670 (334-336), which dropped them into eighth place overall, six shots behind UQAC and eight back of ETS. Dane Fitzpatrick led the Gaiter individuals with a score of 154 (76-78), good enough for 12th place. Jason Hines Duncliffe and James Laing each shot 167, putting them into a tie for 38th place, while Scott Latter (96-86=182) and Ryan Vintinner (97-92=189) rounded out the Bishop's lineup.
 
UP NEXT: The golf team is off this week, and the provincial championship is set for October 3 and 4 at the Royal Quebec Golf Club in Boischatel.
LACROSSE (2-1)
Lacrosse dropped their only game of the week, 12-11 at home to McGill.
 
THURSDAY: McGill 12, Gaiters 11
A goal by Alexander Rohrback with 91 seconds left gave the McGill Redmen a 12-11 victory over the Gaiters in front of over 500 fans at Coulter Field on Thursday night. The Gaiters led through most of the contest, holding leads of 3-2, 6-5 at halftime, and 9-8 after 60 minutes. McGill took an 11-10 lead midway through the fourth quarter, but James Malloy tied the game for Bishop's at the 13:05 mark.
 
The Gaiters' scoring came from five different players, led by five from Josh Crone, while Mike Dube netted a pair. Malloy, Malcolm Westhaver, Andrew MacKay and Joe Laleune each scored once for the Gaiters. McGill had seven different scorers, led by Alex Rohrbach (4G, 1A), while Mike Ting and Leland de Langley each had a pair. The other McGill scoring came from Brandon McLean, J.J. Miller, David Hogarth and Connor Goodwin.
The game was a rugged affair and featured 32 penalties, with Bishop's being flagged 18 times, and was marred by a minor skirmish immediately after the game.
McGill outshot Bishop's 31-18, and Keegan Durovick made 19 saves for the Gaiters in a losing cause. Ward Waesche made seven saves for McGill.

UP NEXT: Lacrosse has one league game this week, as they host Toronto on Sunday morning. Faceoff at Coulter Field is set for 11 a.m.
