WEEKLY RELEASE 8: Big week for Gaiters, with football, lacrosse, rugby and hoops wins

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:

The Bishop’s Gaiters Athlete of the Week is Alexander Fox of the football team. Fox, a native of Montreal West, Que., led the Gaiters with 266 all-purpose yards last week – the fifth-highest total in team history – and was named the league Special Teams Player of the Week after last week's 21-18 win over the McGill Redmen. He caught seven passes for 84 yards, had 48 yards in kickoff returns and 134 yards combined on punt and missed field goal returns.

 

HONOUR ROLL:

  • Onnex Blackwood, Men's Basketball – Named to Laurentian Invitational all-tournament team
  • Shantino Wilson, Football – Scored first career touchdown to complete Gaiter comeback on Saturday
  • Mike Dube, Men's Lacrosse – Scored 11 points over weekend to clinch CUFLA scoring title
  • Max Grouette, Men's Rugby – Gaiters' Man of the Match on Sunday against Sherbrooke
  • Jordan Heather, Football – Posted his fourth 300-yard game of the season on Saturday
  • Noah Harrison, Men's Rugby – Scored a pair of tries in 20-12 win over Sherbrooke
  • Josh Crone, Men's Lacrosse – 14-point weekend to finish second in CUFLA scoring race
  • Tim Hunter, Men's Basketball – Double-double on Sunday led Gaiters over Cape Breton
  • Dale Adamson, Women's Soccer – Gaiters' player of the game on Sunday
  • Dan West, Football – Made two tackles for loss on Saturday, including a sack
  • Charlie Campbell, Men's Rugby – Fullback had strong kicking performance on Sunday night
  • Gareth Gibson, Men's Lacrosse – Four goals, two assists last weekend, along with many key ground balls
  • Mike Andrews, Men's Basketball – Led Gaiters with 16 points on Saturday vs. Western
  • Quincy Van De Cruize, Football – Made career-long 76-yard catch to start Gaiter comeback
  • Greg Harnett, Men's Lacrosse – Led Gaiter defence, with many ground balls and key clears.
  • Becky Yates, Women's Soccer – Made seven saves on Friday against Sherbrooke

Gaiters score comeback win, face #2 Laval this week

 

SATURDAY: McGill 18, Gaiters 21

A 15-yard catch by Shantino Wilson with 23 seconds left gave the Bishop's Gaiters a come-from-behind victory, 21-18, over the McGill Redmen in CIS football action on Saturday afternoon at Coulter Field. Wilson's touchdown, the first of his career, was the culmination of a ten-play, 68-yard drive over 1:37, as the Gaiters completed a comeback from an 11-0 halftime deficit

UP NEXT: The Gaiters close out the regular season on Saturday, as they host the No. 2-ranked Laval Rouge et Or. Kickoff at Coulter Field is set for 1 p.m.

 

MEN’S BASKETBALL (5-3, 5-2 CIS, 0-0 Quebec)
Gaiters go 2-1 at Laurentian tournament

Men's Basketball went 2-1 at the Laurentian Invitational in Sudbury last week. They fell on Friday to the host Laurentian Voyageurs, but picked up wins over the Western Mustangs and the Cape Breton Capers. Onnex Blackwood was named to the tournament All-Star team.

 

FRIDAY: Laurentian 100, Gaiters 88
Onnex Blackwood's 26 points wasn't enough as the Bishop's Gaiters fell 100-88 to the host Laurentian Voyageuers in Day 1 of the Laurentian Invitational in Sudbury, Ont. The Scarborough, Ont., native went 12-for-15 from the field to lead the Gaiters.

SATURDAY: Gaiters 71, Western 59
Mike Andrews' 16 points led the Bishop's Gaiters to a 71-59 win over the University of Western Ontario Mustangs on Day 2 of the Laurentian Invitational tournament in Sudbury, Ont. The Oakville, Ont., native went 6-for-10 from the field as Bishop's evened its record at the tournament to 1-1. The Gaiters led 30-24 at halftime, and 45-40 after three quarters, before scoring 26 points in the fourth quarter to take the victory.

SUNDAY: Gaiters 76, Cape Breton 70
Tim Hunter scored 24 points to lead the Gaiters to a 76-70 win over the Cape Breton Capers on Day 3 of the Laurentian Invitational. The Baie d'Urfé, Que., native went 8-for-15 from the field, including five three-pointers, as the Gaiters posted a come-from behind victory.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters are off this week and return to action on November 5 and 6, when they visit a pair of NCAA Division II schools: Franklin Pierce (N.H.) and Bentley (Mass).

 

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (3-3, 3-3 CIS, 0-0 Quebec)
Gaiters idle this week, head to southern Ontario next week

Women's Basketball was off last week, but returns to action this week with a three-game road trip to southern Ontario to play a trio of OUA schools: the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks, the McMaster Marauders and the U of T Varsity Blues.

 

UP NEXT: The Gaiters' road trip starts on Friday at 6 p.m., as they visit Laurier in Waterloo. On Saturday, they head to Hamilton to play the McMaster Marauders at 6 p.m., and they wind up the road swing with a visit to the Toronto Varsity Blues on Sunday at 1 p.m.

 

WOMEN’S SOCCER (0-10-2)
Gaiters shut out twice last week, final home game on Friday

 

Women's Soccer dropped a pair of games last week, 2-0 to the #8 Sherbrooke Vert & Or at home on Friday, 5-0 at the Concordia Stingers on Sunday afternoon.

 

FRIDAY: Sherbrooke 2, Gaiters 0

A pair of goals by Josée Bélanger led No. 8-ranked Sherbrooke to a 2-0 victory over the Gaiters in CIS women's soccer action tonight at Coulter Field. Bélanger found the net in the 11th and 26th minutes, as the Vert & Or (8-1-2) took a quick 2-0 lead.

SUNDAY – Concordia 5, Gaiters 0
A balanced attack led Concordia to a 5-0 victory over the Gaiters on Sunday afternoon in Montreal. Five different players scored for the Stingers, who improved to 2-7-3 on the year.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters close out the season with a home game on Friday against the UQAM Citadins (1-7-4), with kickoff set for 6 p.m. at Coulter Field, and a visit to the Laval Rouge et Or (4-5-3) on Sunday afternoon.

 

MEN’S RUGBY (3-2-1, 14 pts)
Gaiters win local derby, clinch home playoff game

 

SUNDAY: Gaiters 20, Sherbrooke 12
A pair of tries by Noah Harrison led the Bishop's Gaiters to a 20-12 win over the Sherbrooke Vert & Or on Sunday evening in Sherbrooke. With the win, the Gaiters clinched second place in the Quebec university rugby union, and will host the Concordia Stingers in a league semi-final on Friday night.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters host a league semi-final, on Friday night against the Concordia Stingers (1-4-1). Kickoff at Coulter Field is set for 8:15 p.m.

 

LACROSSE (9-1)

Lacrosse won their final two regular-season games last weekend and clinched second place in the CUFLA East Division, and home-field advantage in the first round of the CUFLA playoffs.

 

FRIDAY: Gaiters 18, Trent 2
The Gaiters cruised to an 18-2 win over the Trent Excalibur on Saturday afternoon. Josh Crone led the Gaiters with nine points (5G, 4A), with Jesse Gattellaro and Alex Henderson each scoring hat tricks. The other Gaiter goals came from Mike Dube (2), Andrew MacKay, Joe Laleune, Alex Dube, Brett Conway and James Malloy. Keegan Durovick picked up the win in goal for the Gaiters.

SATURDAY: Gaiters 18, Toronto 7
The Gaiters downed the U of T Varsity Blues to complete their 9-1 regular season. Josh Crone and Gareth Gibson led the Gaiters, as each scored four goals and an assist. James Malloy and Joe Laleuene each had a pair of goals for the Gaiters, with Mike Dube, Jesse Gattellaro, Rick Sainthill, Alex Henderson, Andrew MacKay and Brett Conway each scoring singles. David Bigley picked up the win in the Bishop's net. Bishop's had 17 minutes in penalties while Toronto was short for 9:30.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters will host the Trent Excalibur (3-7), the #5 seed in the East Division, in a CUFLA First-Round playoff game. The game will be on Saturday at Coulter Field, with the opening faceoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
