WEEKLY RELEASE 9: Lacrosse playoff win highlights weekend as fall sports wind down

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:

Jordan Heather of the Football team is this week's Bishop's University Athlete of the Week. On Saturday, Heather passed for 365 yards, setting a new team single-season record for passing yards, and he also set a new school single-game record with 49 pass attempts. He also set a new league mark with 345 pass attempts in 2011. Heather finished atop the league standings in yards, attempts, completions and touchdowns.

HONOUR ROLL:

  • Jesse Gattellaro, Men's Lacrosse – Scored a hat trick against Trent
  • Gabrielle Chamberland, Women's Basketball – Led Gaiters with 23 points on Saturday at McMaster
  • Noah Harrison, Men's Rugby – Scored a try on Friday night
  • Josh Crone, Men's Lacrosse – Led Gaiters with five points (1G, 4A)
  • Josh Quirion, Men's Rugby – Scored a try on Friday night
  • David Haddrall, Football – Returned from injury to make 8 catches for 105 yards
  • Charlie Campbell, Men's Rugby – Strong kicking game on Friday
  • Tyler Jutras, Football – Led Gaiter defence with a sack, forced fumble and an interception
  • Clare Murphy, Women's Basketball – Scored 16 points and 14 points in last two games last weekend.

FOOTBALL (3-6)
Heather's record-setting performance not enough as Gaiters fall to Laval

SATURDAY: No. 2 Laval 37, Gaiters 15

Jordan Heather threw for two touchdowns and 365 yards, but it was not enough as the Gaiters fell, 37-15, to No. 2-ranked Laval on Saturday afternoon at Coulter Field. Heather set a new school record for passing yards in a season with 2,514, eclipsing the old mark of 2,374 set by Silvio Martel in 1991. His total is the third highest in league history, and the 15th-highest all-time in CIS. Heather attempted 49 passes, setting a school single-game record, and finished with league-record 345 attempts on the season.

MEN’S BASKETBALL (5-3, 5-2 CIS, 0-0 Quebec)
Gaiters return to action with trip to New England

Men's Basketball was off last week, but returns to action this weekend with a pair of games against NCAA Division II schools, Franklin Pierce and Bentley. Bentley went 24-8 last year (18-4 NE-10) and advanced to the 2011 East Regional Final, while Franklin Pierce was 6-21 (4-18 NE-10).

UP NEXT: The Gaiters visit Franklin Pierce in Rindge, N.H. on Saturday at 6 p.m. On Sunday, they head to Waltham, Mass., to play the Bentley Falcons. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (4-5, 4-5 CIS, 0-0 Quebec)
Gaiters go 1-2 on Ontario road trip, host Carleton this week

Women's Basketball went 1-2 on their OUA road trip, with a one-point win at McMaster sandwiched by losses at Wilfrid Laurier and the University of Toronto.

FRIDAY – Wilfrid Laurier 80, Gaiters 49
A big first quarter led the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks to an 80-49 victory over the Gaiters on Friday night in Waterloo. The Golden Hawks opened the game on a 15-4 run, led 23-9 after the first quarter, and cruised to the victory.

SATURDAY – Gaiters 75, McMaster 74
Gabrielle Chamberland's 23 points led the Gaiters to a 75-74 win over the McMaster Marauders on Saturday night in Hamilton. The Sherbrooke native scored 17 second-half points, and her basket with 2:42 to go gave the Gaiters the lead for good at 70-69, as they overcame a six-point deficit after three quarters.

SUNDAY – Toronto 89, Gaiters 70
Jill Stratton's 20 points led the Toronto Varsity Blues to an 89-70 win over the Gaiters on Sunday afternoon in Toronto. Stratton went 6-for-12 from the field and made all six of her free throws for the Blues, who led 45-34 at halftime.

WOMEN’S SOCCER (0-12-2)
Gaiters close out season with pair of shutouts

 


Women's Soccer dropped a pair of games last week, 7-0 to the UQAM Citadins at home on Friday, and 8-0 at the Laval Rouge et Or on Sunday afternoon.

 

 

FRIDAY: UQAM 7, Gaiters 0

A hat trick by Marie-Michel Girard led the UQAM Citadins to a 7-0 shutout of the Gaiters on Friday night at Coulter Field. Girard scored in the 34th, 45th and 59th minutes. The Citadins led 5-0 at halftime, as they took advantage of an injury-depleted Gaiter lineup.

SUNDAY – Laval 8, Gaiters 0
A hat trick by Mélissande Guy led Laval Rouge et Or to an 8-0 shutout of the Gaiters on Sunday     in Quebec City. Guy finished with five points, as she picked up a pair of assists. She scored her hat trick early in the first half, with goals in the 9th, 12th and 14th minutes.

MEN’S RUGBY (3-3-1, 3-2-1 Quebec)
Gaiters fall to Concordia in league semi-final

FRIDAY – Concordia 13, Gaiters 10
A second-half try by Alex Ritchie propelled the Concordia Stingers to a 13-10 victory over the Gaiters in a Quebec university rugby union semi-final at Coulter Field. The crowd of approximately 300 people saw the Stingers score 13 unanswered points after the Gaiters had taken a 5-0 lead late in the first half.

LACROSSE (10-1, 9-1 CUFLA East)

 

Lacrosse advanced to the Baggataway Cup championship tournament after winning their first-round playoff game on Saturday night over the Trent Excalibur.

SATURDAY: Gaiters 14, Trent 10
A hat trick by Jesse Gattellaro led the Gaiters to a 14-10 win over the Trent Excalibur in their CUFLA first-round playoff game on Saturday night at Coulter Field. Gattellaro's two second-quarter goals helped the Gaiters turn a 4-2 first-quarter deficit into a 6-5 lead at halftime. The Gaiters extended their lead to 10-6 after three quarters, and held off a late Trent comeback attempt to book a return trip to the Baggataway Cup tournament.

For the Gaiters, Mike Dube, Brett Conway, James Malloy and Gareth Gibson each had a pair of goals, while Josh Crone, Joseph Laleune and Alex Millin each scored once. Crone had a game-high four assists, to finish with five points. Keegan Durovick picked up the win for the Gaiters in goal.

Trent was led by Travis Szabolcs, who scored three times and finished with five points, with Joe Stanley scoring twice and singles from Josh Gilray, Joe Bedlington, Sean McGee, Josh Robinson and goalkeeper Jon Hiltz.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters head to London for the 2011 Baggataway Cup tournament this week as the No. 2 seed in the East Division. They will play the host Western Ontario Mustangs (7-3, West #3) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Should they win, they would play the Guelph Gryphons (8-2, West #1) on Saturday at 8 p.m. in the league semifinal. The championship game is set for Sunday at 1 p.m.
