WEEKLY RELEASE 16: Women's basketball comeback highlights Gaiter weekend

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK:
The Bishop’s Gaiters Male Athlete of the Week is Tim Hunter of the Men's Basketball team. The third-year forward from Baie d'Urfé, Que. led the Gaiters in both their games last week, scoring a total of 41 points. On Friday night, he scored 18 points and added a team-high six rebounds. On Saturday at Concordia, he dropped in 23 points as the Gaiters fell by five to the Concordia Stingers.
The Bishop’s Gaiters Female Athlete of the Week is Jessy Roy of the Women's Basketball team. The native of Val d'Or, Que. led the Gaiters in both their games this weekend. On Friday, she picked up her second straight double-double, scoring 14 points and adding 12 rebounds, while on Saturday she led the Gaiters with 14 points.
 
HONOUR ROLL:
  • Onnex Blackwood, Men’s Basketball— Had a strong game Saturday night scoring 18.
  • Danna Janvier, Women’s Basketball-- Scored a career high nine points Saturday.  
  • Alison Verville, Women's Soccer – Rookie scored a pair of goals at UQTR
  • Antoine Côté-Caouette, Men’s Basketball-- Tied a career-high total with 11 points Saturday
  • Bailey Trafford, Women's Basketball – Rookie scored ten points, including the game-winners on Friday against Laval
  • Teresa Julian, Women's Soccer – Scored the Gaiters' first goal on Sunday afternoon at UQTR.
  • Taylor Wade, Women's Hockey – Scored a pair of goals on Monday night
  • Jessica Forney, Women's Hockey – Scored twice for the Polar Bears on Monday

 

MEN’S BASKETBALL (1-25, 1-22 CIS, 0-9 QUBL)
Gaiters drop a pair off tough weekend match-ups

FRIDAY: #8 Laval 83, Gaiters 63
Jean-Francois Beaulieu-Maheux scored a season-high 34 points to lead the No. 8-ranked Laval Rouge et Or to an 83-63 win over the Gaiters on Friday night at the Mitchell Gym. Bishop's was led by Tim Hunter who scored 18 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Jeremy Leonard-Smith and Oraine Green, each added ten points.

SATURDAY: #7 Concordia 86, Gaiters 81
The Gaiters nearly erased a 15-point third-quarter deficit, but could not complete the comeback as they fell 86-81 to the No. 7-ranked Concordia Stingers on Saturday night in Montreal. Tim Hunter's 23 points led the Gaiters, who trailed 50-35 with 6:49 left in the third quarter. Bishop's chipped away at the lead through the third and fourth quarters, finally getting to within one point at 81-80 with a minute left in the contest. However, the comeback fell short as Kyle Desmarais scored three of his game-high 24 points in the last 40 seconds to ice the game for the Stingers.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters have a bye this week, but return to action on Thursday, January 27, when they host the Stingers at the Mitchell Gym. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (7-12, 7-11 CIS, 2-7 QUBL)
Gaiters notch first win of 2011

FRIDAY: Gaiters 58, Laval 55
Jessy Roy scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Gaiters to a wild 58-55 win over the Laval Rouge et Or on Friday night at the Mitchell Gym. After Laval took a 55-48 lead with 2:40 to go, the Gaiters responded with a 10-0 lead to snare the victory. Roy completed the Gaiters comeback as she found rookie Bailey Trafford open under the net to put Bishop's up 56-55. A steal by Trafford in the final ten seconds and a pair of Roy free throws secured the Gaiter victory. In addition to her double-double, Roy led the Gaiters with four assists and three steals. Gabrielle Côté-Caouette and Trafford were the other Gaiters in double digits, as they scored ten points each.

SATURDAY: Concordia 57, Bishop’s 51

Difficulty on the boards proved to be the Gaiters' undoing as they suffered a 57-51 loss to the Concordia Stingers on Saturday night in Montreal. The Gaiters surrendered 57 rebounds, one short of their season high, as the Stingers came from behind to prevail in a defensive struggle. The loss obscured a third consecutive strong performance by Jessy Roy, who led the Gaiters with 14 points, seven rebounds, four blocked shots, four assists and four steals. While she was the only one of the visitors to score in double digits, rookie centre Danna Janvier set a career high with nine points.

WOMEN’S INDOOR SOCCER (0-1)
Indoor Soccer drop season opener at UQTR
 
A pair of goals by Jessica Lavallée gave the UQTR Patriotes a 4-3 victory over the Gaiters in the opening game of the Quebec University Indoor Soccer League season on Sunday afternoon in Trois-Rivières. All three of the Gaiters' markers came on free kicks, as Allison Verville hit the net twice for the Gaiters on her way to being named the Gaiters' MVP, while Teresa Julian scored once. For the Patriotes, singles by Marie-Ève Crepeau and Josiane Pothier rounded out the scoring. Rebecca Yates made five saves for the Gaiters in a losing cause.
UP NEXT: The Gaiters' home opener is this Friday, January 21, as they host the Montreal Carabins (0-0-1) at the Centre Multi-Sport Roland Dussault in Fleurimont. Kickoff is set for 9 p.m.
WOMEN’S HOCKEY (5-7)
Polar Bears open 2011 with a win
 
The Polar Bears picked up a convincing 7-0 win over the Néa Dynamie Estrie on Monday night. The Polar Bears, playing their first game of the new year, scored once in each of the first two periods before exploding for five goals in the third period. Taylor Wade and Jessica Forney each scored twice for the Bears, with Chantal Ricahrd, Marley Bowen and Emilee Walker adding one each. Alysha McLeod picked up the shutout for the Bears.
UP NEXT: The Polar Bears are off this week, and return to action on Friday, January 28 when they host the Sherbrooke Junior AA team.
