WEEKLY RELEASE: Cagers' upset of Laval highlights Gaiter weekend

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK:
 
The Bishop’s Gaiters Male Athlete of the Week is Tim Hunter of the Men’s Basketball team. The third year forward from Baie d’Urfé, Que. scored a team high 21 points against Laval on Saturday night, hitting four of five three point attempts. Hunter also led the Gaiters Thursday night against McGill, scoring 13 points while grabbing eight rebounds and adding eight steals.
 
The Bishop’s Gaiters Female Athlete of the Week is Jessy Roy of the Women’s Basketball team. Roy, a fourth year guard from Val d'Or, Que. was the leading scorer for the Gaiters on Saturday night, as she scored 15 points while adding four assists. Roy also scored 16 points Thursday night at McGill, while adding a team high seven rebounds and six steals.

  • Annick Stephanny Charles, Women’s Basketball -- Scored a season high 18 points Thursday against McGill.

Gaiters' upset of No. 10 Laval gives them a weekend split

THURSDAY: McGill 84, Gaiters 59
A 20-point performance by Olivier Bouchard led the McGill Redmen to an 84-59 victory over the Gaiters on Thursday in Montreal. McGill led 22-14 after the first quarter, extended their lead to 42-27 by halftime and 65-47 after three quarters. For the Gaiters, Tim Hunter led with 13 points on 6-for-12 shooting. Sophomore guard Onnex Blackwood added 12, while rookie centre Mike Andrews finished with ten. Hunter and Blackwood each led the Gaiters with seven rebounds, while Hunter also made a season-high eight steals.

SATURDAY: Gaiters 82, Laval 75
A 21-point performance by Tim Hunter led the Gaiters over then-No. 10-ranked Laval, 82-75, on Saturday in front of a boisterous crowd of 1,173 at the Mitchell Gym. The Gaiters took control of the game with an 8-0 run early in the fourth quarter, capped by a Mike Andrews jumper at 7:25 to push the lead to 64-57. Laval pulled back to within one as Jean-Francois Beaulieu-Maheux hit a three to make the score 73-72 with 1:15 to go, but the Gaiters responded with a three by Alex Audette-Génier to restore their four-point cushion. In addition to Hunter's 21, the Gaiters got 15 points from Audette-Génier. Also in double digits were Sean Monplaisir, who scored 11points and four assists, while Antoine Côté-Caouette scored ten and added five boards.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (8-17, 8-16 CIS, 3-12 QUBL)
Pair of heartbreaking losses send Gaiters to an early exit

THURSDAY: McGill 79 Gaiters 78 (OT)
A furious fourth-quarter comeback forced overtime, but the Gaiters could not complete the storybook ending as they suffered a heartbreaking one-point loss, 79-78 (OT), to McGill on Thursday. The Gaiters trailed 64-51 after the third quarter, but used a 12-2 run over the next 2:37 to pull to within three points, and Jessy Roy scored with 23 seconds left to tie the game at 73-73 and force overtime. In the extra session, a three-pointer by Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles gave the Gaiters a 76-75 lead, but a three-point play by Natalie Larocque put McGill up 79-77 with 37 seconds left. Annick Stephanie Charles could only hit one of two free throws, leaving the Gaiters a point short of forcing a second overtime. Charles’ 18 led the Gaiters, while Roy and Katy Germain each had 16 points, and Gabrielle Chamberland added 13. Roy grabbed seven rebounds and six steals, tying her season high.

SATURDAY: Laval 69 Gaiters 68
Marie-Michelle Genois scored 29 points to lead Laval over the Gaiters, 69-68, on Saturday at the Mitchell Gym. The Gaiters started strong and led by as many as 15 points in the second-quarter. They took a 36-27 lead into halftime, and a 53-41 lead after 30 minutes. In the fourth, Sandrine Ducruc put Laval ahead 64-63 with 1:20 left, their first lead since 2-0. Laval pushed the lead to 69-65 in the last minute, but a Bailey Trafford three-point play pulled the Gaiters to within one with 25 seconds left. After Laval bled the clock on their last possession, the Gaiters had one second left to keep their playoff hopes alive. However, their inbounds pass was deflected and the home side could not get a shot off. The Gaiters were led by Jessy Roy, who scored 15 points while adding four assists. Fifth-year guards Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles and Katy Germain scored 11 and eight points respectively in their final home games as Gaiters. Trafford and Gabrielle Côté-Caouette were the only other Gaiters with double figures with ten points each.

WOMEN’S INDOOR SOCCER (0-6)
10-man Gaiters shut out by UQAM

FRIDAY: UQAM 4, Gaiters 0
Two goals by Lora Lehr led the UQAM Citadins over the Gaiters, 4-0, on Friday night in Sherbrooke. UQAM led 2-0 at the break, and the Citadins put the game away with goals in the 76th and 78th minutes. Justine Labrecque and Sabrina Addona added the other two goals for UQAM. It was a physical affair, with three players being booked, while Katie Wallace was ejected in the second half for her second yellow card. Constance Laroche-Lefebvre made six saves to pick up the shutout for UQAM, while Molly Bucholtz made ten saves for the Gaiters. Allison Verville was named MVP for the Gaiters, while Pascale Hébert took similar honours for UQAM. With the loss, the Gaiters are assured an 8th place finish in the QUISL and will face either Montreal or McGill in the first round of the playoffs.

UP NEXT: The Gaiters' regular-season expedition concludes on Friday, as they will slog it out against the Laval Rouge et Or. Kickoff is set for 9 p.m.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY (10-8)
Polar Bears pick up win on Friday, host Alumni on Saturday

On Friday, an injury-depleted Polar Bears lineup downed the visiting Huntingdon Huskies 2-0. Despite their small bench, with both Sacha Gouchie and Jessica Fourney out due to upper-body injuries, the Bears were able to ease past their visitors. Bianca Letarte picked up the shutout in the Bears' net, while Alexane Heroux scored both goals for the Bears. Laurie Lacourse picked up a pair of assists.

On Saturday, the Bears hosted their annual Alumni Game, and approximately 15 Bears Alumnae joined the current squad. The current team (supplemented by a few alums to even out the sides) picked up a 7-4 victory over the Alumni squad. The game was followed by a post-game reception at the Old Lennoxville Golf Course.

UP NEXT: The Bears are off for the Reading Week break, and will return to action on March 12-13 to play in the Stowe, Vt. Tournament.
