LENNOXVILLE, Que. – A pair of goals by Josée Bélanger led the No. 8-ranked Sherbrooke Vert & Or to a 2-0 victory over the Bishop's Gaiters in CIS women's soccer action tonight at Coulter Field. Bélanger found the net in the 11th and 26th minutes, as the Vert & Or (8-1-2) took a quick 2-0 lead.
The injury-depleted Gaiters (0-9-2), playing with only 14 players dressed, held the Vert & Or to nine shots on goal, while taking two of their own. The home side's best chance to break the shutout came in second-half stoppage time, when Sarah Baird (Nepean, Ont.) fired a shot from the top of the box that Sherbrooke goalkeeper Elena Waldispuehl had some trouble handling.Waldispuehl made two saves to earn the shutout, while Becky Yates (Halifax, N.S.) made seven saves in net for the Gaiters. Bélanger earned player of the game honours for Sherbrooke, while defender Dale Adamson (Cambridge, Ont.) won similar honours for Bishop's.
The Gaiters are next in action on Sunday afternoon, as they visit the Concordia Stingers (1-7-3) in Montreal, with kickoff set for 1 p.m. Sherbrooke is also in action on Sunday, as they host UQAM, with kickoff set for 3 p.m.
