LENNOXVILLE, Que. – The McGill Redmen used a balanced attack to defeat the Bishop's Gaiters, 61-44, in Quebec university men's basketball league play at the Mitchell Gym, Friday night. Four players scored in double figures for the Redmen, who picked up their third straight win.

LENNOXVILLE, Que. – A double-double by Anneth Him-Lazarenko led the McGill Martlets over the Bishop's Gaiters, 63-55, in Quebec university women's basketball league play at the Mitchell Gym, Friday night. The fourth-year guard scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, both game highs, for the Martlets, who now lead the Quebec conference by 1 ½ games.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:

Jessy Roy is the Bishop's University Athlete of the Week for the week ending January 29, 2012, earning the nod for the second straight week. The fifth-year point guard from Val d'Or, Que., was dominant in the Gaiters’ 59-55 win over then-league-leading Concordia on Friday night. The former Cégep de Sherbrooke Volontaire scored 12 points, and had team highs with eight rebounds, seven assists and four steals. Roy continues to lead the conference in several categories, including assists (5.0 per game), steals (3.0 per game), minutes played (34.2 per game) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.5). She is currently seventh in the CIS in assists, and 5th in the country in minutes played per game.

  • Tim Hunter, Men's Basketball – 17 points and eight rebounds on Friday night vs. Concordia
  • Taylor Wade, Women's Hockey – Scored seven points (5G, 2A) in four games last weekend
  • Mukiya Post, Men's Basketball – Scored 18 points, including 10 free throws, on Friday
  • Véronique Fortin-Tremblay, Women's Basketball – Gaiters' high scorer with 13 points

LENNOXVILLE, Que. – A strong all-around performance by Jessy Roy (Val d'Or, Que.) led the Bishop's Gaiters to a 59-55 victory over the league-leading Concordia Stingers in Quebec university women's basketball league play at the Mitchell Gym, Friday night. The fifth-year point guard scored 12 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and made a team-high seven assists and four steals, as she led the Gaiters to their third consecutive victory.

LENNOXVILLE, Que. – The Bishop's Gaiters basketball teams both have a single game this weekend, at home to the Concordia Stingers on Friday night. The women's game tips off at 6 p.m., while the men's game follows at 8 p.m. Both games will be webcast on SSN Canada (www.ssncanada.ca) with live stats available at http://livestats.prestosports.com/bishops. Tickets for Friday's doubleheader are $8 for adults, and are available at the door.

LENNOXVILLE, Que. – Katy Germain '10, a member of the Bishop's Gaiters women's basketball team from 2006-11, has signed a professional contract with TSV Towers Speyer-Schifferstadt of the 2.Bundesliga, the German second division, through the end of the 2011-12 season.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:

Jessy Roy is the Bishop's Gaiters Athlete of the Week. The fifth-year point guard from Val d'Or, Que. led the Gaiters to a pair of wins over the weekend, averaging 17 points and six assists. On Friday night, her 18 points led all scorers as the Gaiters defeated UQAM 73-57. She also made a game-high five assists and a pair of steals. On Saturday, the former Volontaire scored 16 points, grabbed a team-high six rebounds, and made seven assists as the Gaiters dumped Laval 72-56, evening their record at 4-4 on the year. Roy now leads the province, and is eighth in the CIS, with 4.7 assists per game.

  • Riley Shkimba, Women's Basketball – Came off the bench to score a career-high 16 points on Saturday
  • Onnex Blackwood, Men's Basketball – Scored 19 points, including 12 in second half, of Gaiters' comeback win vs. Laval

LENNOXVILLE, Que. – A career-high 16 points by Riley Shkimba (Kingston, Ont.) led the Bishop's Gaiters over the Laval Rouge et Or, 72-56, in Quebec university women's basketball league play at the Mitchell Gym, Saturday afternoon. The five-foot-ten sophomore came off the bench to drain four three-pointers for the Gaiters, who never trailed in the contest and picked up their second win in less than 24 hours.

MONTREAL, Que. – A double-double by Catherine Bélanger-Pâquet (Quebec City, Que.) led the Bishop's Gaiters to a 73-57 victory over the UQAM Citadins in Quebec university women's basketball league play tonight at the UQAM sports centre. Bélanger-Pâquet scored 13 points and grabbed ten rebounds as she picked up her second double-double of the season. With the win, the Gaiters snapped their two-game losing streak, and picked up their first win of 2012.

While the Bishop's University campus went into a deep freeze last weekend, Alex Perno, the Bishop's Gaiters women's basketball head coach, was not among those searching for an extra blanket. Instead, Perno was in Guayaquil, Ecuador (average temperature, 30° C) last weekend, delivering clinics to coaches and players.

Perno took advantage of a rare weekend off from league play to work with approximately 20 of the top players in the South American country, helping to improve their fundamentals and their defence.
