ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:

Jessy Roy is the Bishop's University Athlete of the Week for the week ending January 29, 2012, earning the nod for the second straight week. The fifth-year point guard from Val d'Or, Que., was dominant in the Gaiters’ 59-55 win over then-league-leading Concordia on Friday night. The former Cégep de Sherbrooke Volontaire scored 12 points, and had team highs with eight rebounds, seven assists and four steals. Roy continues to lead the conference in several categories, including assists (5.0 per game), steals (3.0 per game), minutes played (34.2 per game) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.5). She is currently seventh in the CIS in assists, and 5th in the country in minutes played per game.

 

HONOUR ROLL:

  • Tim Hunter, Men's Basketball – 17 points and eight rebounds on Friday night vs. Concordia
  • Taylor Wade, Women's Hockey – Scored seven points (5G, 2A) in four games last weekend
  • Mukiya Post, Men's Basketball – Scored 18 points, including 10 free throws, on Friday
  • Véronique Fortin-Tremblay, Women's Basketball – Gaiters' high scorer with 13 points
  • Sean Monplaisir, Men's Basketball – 14 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists on Friday night.
  • Katie Ramm, Women's Hockey – Scored seven points (2G, 5A) in four games last weekend.
  • Catherine Bélanger-Pâquet, Women's Basketball – Led Gaiters with seven defensive rebounds.
  • Emiliee Walker, Women's Hockey – Netted two goals and an assist last weekend.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:

Jessy Roy is the Bishop's Gaiters Athlete of the Week. The fifth-year point guard from Val d'Or, Que. led the Gaiters to a pair of wins over the weekend, averaging 17 points and six assists. On Friday night, her 18 points led all scorers as the Gaiters defeated UQAM 73-57. She also made a game-high five assists and a pair of steals. On Saturday, the former Volontaire scored 16 points, grabbed a team-high six rebounds, and made seven assists as the Gaiters dumped Laval 72-56, evening their record at 4-4 on the year. Roy now leads the province, and is eighth in the CIS, with 4.7 assists per game.

  • Riley Shkimba, Women's Basketball – Came off the bench to score a career-high 16 points on Saturday
  • Onnex Blackwood, Men's Basketball – Scored 19 points, including 12 in second half, of Gaiters' comeback win vs. Laval
  • Taylor Wade, Women's Hockey – Polar Bears' player-of-the game twice last weekend
  • Tim Hunter, Men's Basketball – Led Gaiters with 36 points over two games, as well as game-high five assists on Saturday

The Bishop's Gaiters' Athlete of the Week is Jessy Roy from the Women's Basketball team. Roy, a fifth-year point guard from Val d'Or, led the Gaiters in their game at McGill on Thursday night, with 13 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals in 30 minutes.

 

HONOUR ROLL:

  • Tim Hunter, Men's Basketball – Gaiters' leading scorer on Thursday with 19 points and four steals
  • Gabrielle Chamberland, Women's Basketball – Gaiters' top scorer on Thursday with 16 points

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:

The Bishop's Gaiters Athlete of the Week is Gabrielle Chamberland of the women's basketball team. The Sherbrooke led the Gaiters with 36 points over last weekend's two games. On Friday, she led the Gaiters with 16 points, including a trio of three pointers. On Saturday, she had her fourth 20-point game of the year as she led the Gaiters to a 56-45 win over McGill.

 

HONOUR ROLL:

  • Mukiya Post, Men's Basketball – Led Gaiters with 20 points on Friday, 13 points on Saturday.
  • Catherine Bélanger-Pâquet, Women's Basketball – Double-double on Saturday night (11 pts, 11 rebs)
  • Katie Ramm, Women's Hockey – Scored four goals in four games for the Polar Bears.
  • Jessy Roy, Women's Basketball – Eight points, seven rebounds, six assists on Friday night
  • Katie Booth, Women's Hockey – Goalie picked up a win and a tie in her two starts last weekend.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:

The Bishop's Gaiters Athlete of the Week is Eloisa Katz of the women's basketball team. The native of Ra'anve led the Gaiters in both points (19) and rebounds (6) on Saturday night at Laval. The rookie forward also made seven of nine free throw attempts for the Gaiters.

 

HONOUR ROLL:

  • Onnex Blackwood, Men's Basketball – Second double-double of the year, with 14 points and 12 rebounds
  • Jessy Roy, Women's Basketball – Scored 12 points, and made a game-high six steals.

LENNOXVILLE, Que. – The Bishop's University Women's Hockey team announced today that they have been invited to join the Maritime Intercollegiate Women's Hockey Challenge for the upcoming season. The MIWHC includes five other teams, like the Polar Bears all intercollegiate club-level teams: the University of New Brunswick (Fredericton), Holland College of P.E.I., along with Acadia University, Cape Breton University and Université Ste-Anne, all based in Nova Scotia.

LENNOXVILLE, Que. - Jesse Andrews (Pickering, Ont.), Mike Dube (Brockville, Ont.) and Jessy Roy (Val d'Or, Que.) were named the Bishop's University Athletes of the Year at the annual awards gala held tonight in Sherbrooke. Also winning major awards were Taylor Wade (Wolfville, N.S.) and Andrew Jamieson (Beaconsfield, Que.), who were named Freshmen of the Year, while Katie Allen (Vankleek Hill, Ont.) and Zak Buis (North Delta, B.C.) were named the winners of the Academic Student-Athlete of the Year Award. Karl Hunting, the former coach of the Polar Bears women's hockey team, was awarded the prestigious Ray Almond Award for his contributions to Bishop's Athletics. At the gala, over 40 awards were presented across all nine Bishop's athletic programs.

The Bishopnullrsquo;s Gaiters Male Athlete of the Week is Mike Andrews of the Mennullrsquo;s Basketball team. Andrews, a rookie centre from Oakville, Ont., had a double-double for the Gaiters on Saturday, scoring 14 points and grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds. He also chipped in with a pair of steals, as he went 6-for-7 from the field.

The Bishop’s Gaiters Male Athlete of the Week is Tim Hunter of the Men’s Basketball team. The third year forward from Baie d’Urfé, Que. scored a team high 21 points against Laval on Saturday night, hitting four of five three point attempts. Hunter also led the Gaiters Thursday night against McGill, scoring 13 points while grabbing eight rebounds and adding eight steals.

The Bishop’s Gaiters Male Athlete of the Week is Onnex Blackwood of the Men’s Basketball team. The second year guard from Scarborough, Ont. scored a team high 17 points against McGill on Saturday night while adding eight rebounds.
 
The Bishop’s Gaiters Female Athlete of the Week is Bailey Trafford of the Women’s Basketball team. Trafford, a first-year centre from Centreville Que., was the leading scorer for the Gaiters on Saturday night, as she scored 14 points while adding a team high five rebounds.
 
HONOUR ROLL:
  • Mike Andrews, Men’s Basketball -- Had a double-double Saturday scoring 13 and grabbing 11 rebounds with three blocks.
  • Jessy Roy, Women’s Basketball -- Scored twelve points and had eight rebounds Saturday vs. McGill.
  • Alysha McLeod, Women’s Hockey -- Played strong in net for the Polar Bears over the weekend.
  • Tim Hunter, Men’s Basketball -- Scored ten points Saturday while adding four assists.
